STEPS ALONG THE WAY - OPITO 2004
These works sit within the Tracing the Seasons series and were painted for a show at the Upstairs Gallery in Whitianga. The imagery is based on a metaphorical walk along Opito Bay and draw on ideas relating to the Stations of the Cross ritual, and to Chris Tilley's description of walking the length of the Dorset Cursus described in his "Phenomonology of Landscape"
One also has to acknowledge the work of Colin McCahon.
This set of paintings was the first where I planned the layout of the exhibition to as far as possible relate to the actual landscape featured. I like the idea that works should relate to the place.
To walk from the first to the last of the 14 works was to simulate the walk along Opito Bay.
