This series of works evolved from my photos of the interior of Barcelona Cathedral and subsequent digital manipulation [see Sacred Places and Ritual Spaces]. The dominant image to emerge was the X form. As a symbol X has a multitude of established uses, ie. in relation to identity, affirmation and denial, religion, the unknown, etc. As the St Andrews Cross it can take on an anthropomorphic form with the violent overlay of such usage. I was also thinking of the martyrdom of St Eulalia to whom the Cathedral is dedicated.
The X form is also the earliest [70,000 years - the Blombos cave ochre crayon] recorded image by a human being that indicates the capacity for symbolic thought.
The series is on unstretched canvas 1800 x 900 mm. The media is acrylic and crayon.
